Mary Rogers

Mary Bean Rogers was part of the circle of artists who helped influence the American Modernist movement during the early 20th century. She graduated from the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr in 1921 and attended the School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where she met artist and future husband, Richard Rogers. She also formed connections with several blossoming art students in the Philadelphia region including noted Bucks County artist, Anne Goodell Lathrop and studied under the direction of Modernist painter, Arthur Carles, Jr. During the early years of her marriage, Bean and Rogers spent several summers at the Breckenridge School of Art in Gloucester, Mass. under the instruction of American painter Hugh Henry Breckenridge.

Mary and her husband lived in Norristown until they purchased the historic Daniel Hiester House in Sumneytown, Pa. The 1757 Georgian style house was home to Revolutionary War colonel, Statesman, and patriot Daniel Hiester. The house was included in the very first colonial map of Pennsylvania. Bean continued to paint throughout her life and was connected to an extensive network of local artists. In her personal belongings was found pamphlets for some of her exhibitions. Notably, she showed at the Art League of Washington D.C. in 1933 with such artists as John Fulton Folinsbee (1892-1972), Edward Shepard Hewitt (1877-1962), Frederick William Harer (1879 - 1947), and Bernard Badura (1896 - 1986) among others. In a personal correspondence between herself and Nancy Lathrop, it is mentioned that the renowned art collector Duncan Phillips compared her style to a Matisse.

Another noted exhibition was the Annual Water Color and Miniature Exhibition in 1928 where she exhibited a watercolor titled “Nantucket; No. 2.” She was a member of The Plastic Club in Philadelphia, an art club strictly for women artists. Bean exhibited her watercolor “Behind the Church” with The Plastic Club in their Thirtieth Annual Colour Exhibition along with Fern Coppedge (1883 - 1951), Wuanita Smith (1866 - 1959), Cora Smalley Brooks (1885 - 1930), Mildred Bunting Miller (1892 - 1964), and many other women artists. Other known places of exhibition include the Baltimore Water Color Club; Baltimore Museum of Art, First Annual Exhibition of The Boston Society of Independent Artists; Boston, Mass., Cheltenham Township Art Centre along with Walter Emerson Baum (1884 - 1956), and a personal exhibition at the Beach Theater; Cape May, NJ. Mary Bean and her husband were immersed in the Philadelphia art scene and in the development of American Modernism. Their involvement in the art world helped trailblaze the movement from Impressionism to Modernism. After being hidden away in storage for a number of years, Alderfer Auction is proud to present Mary Bean’s paintings for the first time in decades.

Richard Rogers

Richard Rogers (1903 – 1967) was part of the development of American Modernist art in the early 20th century. Throughout his career, he experimented with a variety of genres including Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism, and even Abstract Expressionism. His strong use of colors and sometimes distortion of perspectives and forms highlight his artistic training by famous painters such as Arthur Carles and Hugh Breckenridge.  Rogers graduated from Phoenixville High School and attended the School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia where he met fellow art student and future wife, Mary Bean. The two also studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under the instruction of Arthur Beecher Carles, Jr. He and his wife spent several summers as students in Gloucester Mass. at the Breckenridge School of Art under the instruction of Hugh Henry Breckenridge. Being a direct descendent of prominent Swedish, Welsh Quaker and Silesian Schwenkfelder founders in Pennsylvania, Rogers had a deep-rooted interest in local Pennsylvania history. He and his wife Mary purchased the historic Daniel Heister homestead in Sumneytown, Pa where they lived for many years. Rogers taught painting throughout the area and at the historic homestead, sometimes setting his classes up around the picturesque grounds.

Along with his wife, his paintings were exhibited throughout the major art centers of the East Coast. He was featured in the New Hope Art and Literature catalog and exhibited at the Boston Society of Independent Artists Annual Exhibit. He also taught classes in Fine Arts at the Chestnut Hill Creative Art Studio. Rogers passed away at the young age of 64. His artwork has been kept away from the public’s eye for almost 30 years. Alderfer Auction is proud to present pieces of his repertoire in their Fine Arts Auctions. Take advantage of this opportunity to own a piece of work by this missing puzzle piece of an artist whose studies and influence helped trailblaze the artistic movements from impressionism to modernism.

Mid Century Modern

Clean lines, organic curves, minimalism & functionality are the building blocks of great Mid-Century Modern design. Stemming from the Bauhaus style in Germany & the International style which grew from the Bauhaus movement in America, the look can be dated in its height of popularity from the mid-1930’s to the mid-1960’s. This is when the original designs were created & began being manufactured to the eagerly waiting masses. Iconic designers emerged from this time period of creative ingenuity, like the great Edward Wormley, Harry Bertoia, Charles & Ray Eames, George Nakashima, Paul McCobb & John Saladino. The list can continue on as there were many designers making a name for themselves by creating new pieces in this style. In particular designers from Germany who fled their country during & after World War II, immigrating to America & bringing their design style with them.

Mid-Century Modern furniture has stood the test of time. The look of modernity personified has remained fresh & desired since its inception. The pieces have been copied many times over from their original predecessors, but rarely have the originals been bettered by this resurgence. Easily fitting in with most interior design, collectors of these pieces can be found the world over & we here at Alderfer Auction are happy to promote the growing décor trend by providing the originals to our clients designed by the greats themselves.

You knocked it out of the park with your auction sold price…

“Great job Alderfer!  You really knocked it out of the park with the your auction sold price on my Ranulph Bye Watercolor painting. It received the 6th highest result for Bye Watercolor out of 416 auction records per AskArt.  4 of the 5 higher were oils.  Only one watercolor was higher, Sedgwick Station, Philadelphia, that sold in March, 2008, just before the sub-prime crash.” - California Seller

Musical Instruments

Interests in a music genre is as diverse as an individual’s personality. Whether your interest is classic rock or classical, jazz, blue grass or hip hop, the instruments that create the music are the same. In many collector categories, the demographics of buyers play a strong influence in collecting trends. We have found this to be minimized in each category of musical Instruments, as the instruments and the craftsmen that have created them, have become the collected.

Alderfer Auction frequently hosts auctions of musical instruments with a range from strings to percussion, wood winds, brass and electronics. Located just 30 miles south of the Martin guitar factory, Alderfer has established a reputation for record prices in sales for these fine works of art. Artist-signed guitars are the quest of many guitar collectors due to the added value and artistry of many famous makers such as Martin, Gibson and Fender. If Classical instruments are your interest, Alderfer also frequently finds quality violins, violas, cellos and harps.  If you beat to a different drum, no problem. Whether you are an accomplished drummer or a beginner, we frequently sell sets that will appeal to a variety of interests.

I had 3-types of interactions and they all were stellar…I just received my well-packaged items from a recent auction. I have had 3 types of interactions and they have all been stellar: pick-up at Alderfer; meeting this past weekend at the Philly Guitar Show booth; and this shipping experience. It was all wonderful. I also want to add that your iPhone App is wonderful.  Thanks for everything.  Now I have to find a way to buy one of these properties from you!  [smile]  Sincerely, W.T. 11/10/21

Consignment Testimonials

Services are more extensive than converting “stuff” to cash…"I wish to thank you Brent personally and the staff of Alderfer Auction for the efficiency and integrity in the disposition of M.S.'s personal property. Fortunately her wishes were clearly stated, and she appointed an excellent attorney. In my role as Executor, I gained an appreciation for the role of your services which is more extensive than converting "stuff" to cash. It was less than three months from when you first visited the property to the second and final assistance with shipping, moving, storage, additional sorting and appraisals, advertising, and two auction venues. Particularly impressive was the recent fine arts catalogued auction. In addition to a full auction house, there were multiple online monitors and at least six or seven staffed phone lines receiving bids from around the world. Without exception, those who knew and loved this remarkable lady had nothing but compliments for the role of Alderfer Auction. You maximized the potential for her named non-profit beneficiary. Simply stated, thank you for your exemplary service. A special note of appreciation goes to the A-team of Brigid, Vicki and Bryce who so efficiently and effectively packaged the contents of her house." --R.B., Doylestown, PA

Consignment Testimonials

"Was extremely pleased about the sale amounts and your very reasonable commissions…I wanted to advise you of my recent experience with Alderfer's and especially your firearm specialist. My dad is 92 and received his first gun at age 12. Since then he enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, and the camaraderie that goes with all that. Over the years he acquired quite a collection. Unfortunately, his age and health no longer allow him to participate, and we wanted to rehome his firearms while he was still here to participate. As you can imagine, this was a very emotional process for him. I contacted your company because everyone knows Alderfer's is the best auction group!  Your firearm specialist came to our home and was aware of what this collection meant to my father. During the time he was cataloguing and removing the guns, he was very professional, as I knew he would be. He was also very personable and respectful of my father, chatting with dad and immediately putting him at ease. Your specialist kept me apprised about the auctions, sales and payment processing.  Dad was happy and your specialsit did all the work and all he had to do was wait for sales notification.  And, dad was extremely pleased about the sale amounts and your very reasonable commissions. I am sure you regularly receive positive feedback about your firearm specialist, and I wanted you to know he went above and beyond in the way he handled this very personal experience. I've already recommended Alderfer's to several friends and coworkers and could not speak highly enough. Many thanks to your specialist and your organization!" - M.P., Customer

Made us feel very comfortable with the process along with handling the guns…First, I wanted to thank you for making the transition of father-in-law's gun collection so easy. You were very respectful and made my mother in-law feel very comfortable with the process along with handing over the guns to you and your Auction. Now the hard work begins to get the most value from the collection at the upcoming auction on June 18th. Thanks again for your professionalism. We look forward to working with you and Alderfer Auction. " - D.D., Firearms Consignor

Coins

Coin collecting is among the earliest forms of collecting dating back to Ancient Rome; it is only fitting that it be paired with one of the earliest forms of selling goods and services. Today coins are among the top grossing items sold at public auction in the U.S. and around the world.

Alderfer Auction sells a variety of coins and currency from collections and estates. The collector/investor market places worth on the numismatic value of the coins or currency in addition to the gold or silver value. The value of coins and currency is based on its condition, minting, production limits and survivorship. Alderfer Auction carefully reviews each coin to determine its market value at auction. Frequently, coins are sold as individual items while others may be lotted to appeal to the particular market. These are some of the many benefits of selling coins at auction including quality of merchandise, exposure through mass media marketing, diversity of buyers and reputation.

Joseph Hoover

Joseph Hoover graduated from West Chester University with a degree in Elementary Education and earned his Master’s in Music from Penn State University. He taught third-grade for twenty-seven years at Owen J Roberts. Hoover’s room was no ordinary classroom though. He kept it filled with rotated art which he tasked his students with creating on a monthly basis. His room was also decorated with random pets and a piano which he played for his students every day. Hoover and his wife also taught private music lessons and hosted a recital every summer at the Hoover House. The recital was always complemented by an art show in which he, his students, and his children would exhibit in.

Hoover retired from teaching in 1993 and devoted his time to creating art every single day at his home studio. His house sat at the end of a country road surrounded by flowers and woods. He trained for a year with James McFarland, the former President of the American Watercolor Society. Hoover was also inspired by his sister, Helen Hoover who was an artist.

Sometime around the mid nineteen nineties, Hoover started exhibiting his art at regional shows throughout Chester, Berks and Montgomery Counties. He was commissioned by the Town of Boyertown to paint one of their “Life Sized Bears” which formerly decorated the town back in the early part of this millennia. Today, Hoover has retired from his artistic endeavors at the age of ninety and spends his days reading, doing Sudoku puzzles, and feeding the birds that congregate around his front porch in the country valley.

Following the war, he attended Temple University in Philadelphia and began his professional career as an illustrator for an advertising company where he designed images collectible gum cards. His career as an artist continued with freelance work as a commercial illustrator for large corporations such as AT&T, United Airlines, Chrysler Corp., and others. In 1976, he was commissioned for a poster for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey bicentennial circus poster. He also created an impressive oil on canvas of mastodons for the New Jersey State Museum’s display. Before his retirement from commercial work in 1989, King studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. After retirement, he devoted himself to painting social commentary works on issues that were most important to him. He listed these issues in a personal statement as “the inexorable metastasizing human population, prostitutional politics, the ever-lowering cultural and moral common denominators, the horrific pressures on endangered species, crime, and the billions of those whose religious aspirations seem to relegate this planet to a mere toilet stop on the way to heaven.” King’s art has been exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy Alumni Fellowship Shows; The State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg; The Allentown Art Museum; the Woodmere Museum, Phila.; Mystic Connecticut Marine Museum; Phillips Mill Annual Art Exhibition, New Hope; Experimental Aircraft Museum, Oshkosh, WI; Art in City Hall, Phila.; among others.

One of the luxuries of being an auction house in the Philadelphia area is to locate treasures from the expansion of artisan period cabinetry and furniture making to include Queen Anne, Chippendale, and Federal along with Dutch immigration and primitive finds from high end estates. Furniture that has stood the test of time and continues to be well sought after and desired. Moving into the modern era, trends of geometric and free form design have spurred interest and excitement amongst buyers and sellers. Early 20th C. to Mid-Century Modern pieces from American, Danish, and Scandinavian artists such as Stickley, Herman Miller, George Nakashima, Eero Saarinen, and Hans Wegner. Whether you are a buyer looking to furnish a home, a collector looking to round out a collection, or a seller looking to downsize Alderfer Auction can meet your needs in the furniture market.

PA Impressionists

Alderfer Auction is situated within a community rich in art and conveniently located in the suburbs of Philadelphia. This area is home to the New Hope School artists and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. It has provided a backdrop for many local artists throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. With deep roots in "the home of art" filled with artist studios and galleries, Alderfer Auction has over 50 years experience, expertise and relationships with many of the PA artists and collectors.

Alderfer Auction specializes in the works of Pennsylvania Impressionists. Located just miles from New Hope, Bucks County and the Delaware River, this rich and diverse landscape provided popular subject matter for many of the Pennsylvania Impressionist painters and the painters of the New Hope School. These paintings embody the nature that surrounds us in the PA countryside often depicting recognizable stone buildings among flowering fields or snow-covered roads, bridges and streams. The movement began in the first half of the 20th century when landscape painter William Langson Lathrop moved to the town of New Hope in 1898 and founded a summer school for art.

The movement is often referred to as the “New Hope School” because artists in Bucks County and New Hope in particular, schooled, taught and produced the most well-known works. This can be deceiving, as many works were painted outside of the town of New Hope. One of the well known artists, often featured in our Fine Art & Collectors auctions, is Walter E. Baum. He not only worked as an artist, but also, as a teacher and educator forming the Baum School of Art and the Allentown Art Museum (click here to read about our record breaker Baum & other PA Impressionist artwork records). Because of Baum, the influence of the movement expanded beyond Bucks County into the Lehigh Valley, specifically into the Allentown area. It is within this region that the movement continued to thrive well into the 1940’s & 1950’s. Art historians regard this group of the Pennsylvania Impressionists as the Baum Circle.

Pennsylvania Impressionism married the style and ideology of French Impressionism with American Impressionism. It remained more “American” then other impressionist movements happening throughout America at that time. It stayed rooted in its focus on landscapes and retained the careful draftsmanship that most of its practitioners had learned at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.  It is a hybrid of French and American ideas and not so much a full adoption of European ideas. Through its artistic practices it helped Americans gradually become familiar with many of the new artistic concepts coming from Europe in the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Contact us today to start the consignment process. Let our art auction experts answer your questions regarding your art collection and explain the auction process.

Having deep roots in the “Home of Art” and Pennsylvania Impressionism, Alderfer Auction holds records with George Sotter’s “Village at Night” for $264,500, and “Snowbound Hills” for $247,250. Walter E. Baum's “The Mill Sellersville, Winter” sold for a record $97,750. Additionally, “Snowbound Hills” by Arthur Meltzer still remains in the top two sales at $126,500. Other record-setters by Pennsylvania artists include pieces by Peter Sculthorpe, Lois Bosa, and Jean Halter.

Beauty is in the eye of how Alderfer Auction curates paintings, sketches, illustrations and drawings and how it masterfully matches the various canvases to the worldwide market of “beholders.”

Considering Selling Your Home, Now What?

How to Sell a Home at Auction.

Now is the time you have decided that you are ready to move. Whether you are downsizing, moving to another state, entering into a retirement community or its economic reasons, a number of questions go through your mind. Where do I start? Who do I call? How do I empty my home of the personal property that I am not going to take with me?  What value can I get for my home? What items can we take with us? Alderfer Auction can help you through this process from start to finish to alleviate stress and bring value to your largest assets.

Transition & Downsizing of Personal Property

If you are planning a transition into a new living situation, downsizing is often part of the equation. The task that lies before you, can seem overwhelming. It helps if you have a plan. The first step is to decide what you are taking with you to your new home. Our Transition Team can assist with this step by measuring your furniture and making a floor plan of your new space to show how it will fit. Next you will want to decide which items you would like to give to your family and friends. There may also be items in your home that you would like to sell. An Alderfer Auction salesperson can do a free walk-through, in-home consultation and provide an estimated value of your belongings and options. You can also consider donating items to various organizations. Lastly, a clean-out company can assist you with cleaning out your home and preparing it for the new owner. Alderfer Auction Transition and Downsizing Team can assist you with each step of the process, including packing and unpacking the items that you are taking. Making a transition involves many decisions. Alderfer Auction can help guide you in the decision-making process.

Real Estate

The next step to your journey, is how to sell your largest, lifetime asset, your real estate property. Speak to an Alderfer Auction’s Real Estate Specialist who will view the real estate property and discuss the options and benefits of selling your real property at auction. The real estate specialist will review the options, perform neighborhood property comparables and develop the listing timelines.

When selling Real Estate by the auction method, the seller will be setting the terms and conditions of the sale, timelines and the property will be sold as-is. Because the property is sold as-is, there are no back and forth negotiations after the property is sold at auction. You, the seller, are in control! Our auction company will offer open houses and showings for the property. We also offer Property Information Packets for all bidders interested in the property at the open house and on our website. We have an aggressive and proven marketing plan for your home that includes professional photography, sales materials, online listings, search engines, advertising, social and more. We also provide pertinent inspections to help the buyer make a more informed bid. To further incentivize buyers, realtors and brokers, Alderfer Auction even provides compensation to the winning bidder’s broker. The seller receives 100% of the sale price, the buyer pays commission. There are no other extraneous fees to the seller.

I Want to Buy a Home at Auction, Now What?

5 easy steps to buying a home at alderfer auction infographic

Auction does not mean foreclosure or a distressed home. The aucton method makes it easy to buy real estate property. Like any large purchase, you need to do your research and be informed.

First, every auction has terms and conditions that will serve as the contract for the purchase of the real estate. Review the document, understand the terms and if you have questions call the auction specialist. The auction specialist will guide you through the process for better understanding.

Alderfer Auction will have available times for the buyers to view the property. You will receive a property information packet which will include professional photography, room measurements, seller’s disclosure, title search and any inspections that were elected to be done for the property. The buyer is allowed to bring a contractor and/or inspector during the showing times.

Many people who are not familiar with buying real estate through auction say, “auctions are cash only sales”. This is false. The majority of our properties go through the typical mortgage lending process. If you need to obtain financing, you will need to apply for pre-approval for a conventional loan. This will give you the amount you are able to bid on the property, without going over the allowable loan amount.  Knowing your finances before you bid is very important. The nice part is that auctions do not have mortgage or appraisal contingencies. Depending on the terms of the auction, certified funds will need to be shown to the auction company in order to register and bid on the real estate. This shows the auction house that the buyer is eligible to purchase and bid on the home.

It is auction day! The crowd is humming and the auction goers are going through a final home walk-through preview. People are registering and asking their last-minute questions. Some of our properties are sold live and online, where as some are live on location only. If the property is being sold online also, a staff member will be executing bids from a computer online. The online bidders have to make the same preparations as live bidders to prove they have certified funds to make the purchase. Everyone has the same opportunity to buy the property.

The auction starts! The auction only takes 20 minutes, so don’t be late! There will be a quick overview of the auction’s terms and conditions, which are provided at the beginning of the property listing. The auctioneer starts her/his chant and off we go! The auctioneer will take a moment to pause to walk around the crowd and see if anyone has anymore questions. Once, all final questions are answered, the auctioneer re-opens the bidding so the buyers have one more opportunity to put place their last bid on the property. The highest and best bid wins!

The auction is over! The winning bidder and seller will sign all of the paperwork and transfer the predetermined deposit with certified funds. The certified funds will be held by the auction company in a non-bearing interest bank account. The winning bidder will receive a copy of the paperwork so that they can start the mortgage process. Depending on the terms and condition a settlement date will be set. This time frame will be an ample amount of time to receive a mortgage. The buyer is allowed to choose his/her own closing company for settlement day. The auction specialist is also available to help the buyer with any questions as well.

Settlement day is here!  The buyer and seller will come together to sign-over the deed of the property along with all pertinent paperwork. The auction company will bring the deposit money that was placed day of the auction. The deposit check is made out to the closing company to go towards the closing costs. Keys are exchanged and the property is officially yours! Congratulations!

Myth #1: Real Estate Auction Means Foreclosure.

Answer #1: False.

Homes that we sell are auctioned by choice, not by bank mandate. Our sellers chose the auction method because they want to take control of the sale of their home.  An auction will establish the terms and conditions of the home, i.e a timeline of events for which the home will be sold. Open houses and the actual auction. The property is sold without contingencies. Contingencies such as home inspection or a mortgage contingency are not part of the auction process.  The home is being sold as is and our auction company will provide a seller’s disclosure, and other inspections to help with the buying and selling of the property.  The property is not a “sight unseen” auction like a sheriff sale.  Alderfer Auction will provide open houses and showings to help the buyer make an informed bid.

Auctions are another viable and competitive way of selling real property.

Myth #2: Auction Homes Must Be Purchased In Full, Cash Only.

Answer #2: False.

Majority of our Real Estate Auctions have gone through a mortgage process.  After the auction has ended, and depending on the terms of the auction, the buyer is allowed 30-45 days for settlement.  That is an ample amount of time for a mortgage company to process and the closing company to aid in your home buying needs.  A deposit in certified funds is required to be allowed to bid at our auctions. The deposit will be held by Alderfer Auction and will be presented back at settlement for closing.   We work with the mortgage and closing company every step of the way to ensure a quick and seamless transaction.

Myth #3: I Need a Real Estate Agent to Buy Through Auction.

Answer #3: False.

A real estate agent is not needed to buy through the auction method.  The Alderfer Auction team is here to help and answer any questions you may have.

IF, you do have a Real Estate Agent and want to buy a home through the Auction method, our company provides a broker participation for the winning bidder agent.

Terms and Conditions of Sale

Alderfer Auction, 501 Fairgrounds Road, Hatfield, PA 19440. 215.393.3000.

By bidding at Alderfer Auction whether it be live, online, onsite, absentee or phone bid, you agree to be bound by Alderfer Auction’s Terms & Conditions stated here forth. Addendum statements made day of auction take precedence over previously printed materials.

The validity and interpretation of any of the terms and provisions of this agreement or of the rights and duties of the parties under this agreement shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and venue of all proceedings shall occur in Montgomery County, PA.

1. Bidding Qualifications

Live Bidding
Buyers must register for a bidding number by giving name, address, phone number, and identification acceptable to us. Please show your bidder number to the auctioneer after each purchase you make.

The highest bidder shall be the buyer, and if any dispute arises between two or more bidders, the auctioneer shall decide the buyer or immediately put the item up for sale again. In the event of a tie between an online bidder and the floor bidder, the successful bidder will be at the Auctioneer’s discretion. The auctioneer’s decision will be binding and final.

Some lots are offered subject to a reserve, which is a confidential minimum price below which such a lot will not be sold. The record of sale, kept by the auctioneer and clerk, will be taken as absolute and final in all disputes.

Live and Online Bidding
Live and Online Auctions are conducted in front of a live audience. During these events each item presented in the auction is also available for bidding in an online venue hosted by a third party provider. While the auctioneer is receiving bids from an assembled audience, phone and absentee bidders, the auctioneer is also taking bids from bidders who are bidding through the third-party providers in real time or by advance bidding. Following the auction the successful bidders are notified and payment arrangements are made; applicable buyer’s premium applies.

At its discretion, Alderfer Auction may also accept bids from approved internet bidders. Alderfer Auction or any of its staff shall not be held responsible or liable for any human or technical bidding errors, or internet bidding system shutdowns that may occur.

Online Only Bidding
Alderfer Auction sometimes uses the services of a third party auction platform for online bidding. Please refer to third party website for how to register and bid online. Buyer is responsible for all online bidding. Alderfer Auction cannot place bids for the buyer as the buyer must properly register and bid through the third party platform.

At its discretion, Alderfer Auction may also accept bids from approved internet bidders. Alderfer Auction or any of its staff shall not be held responsible or liable for any human or technical bidding errors, or internet bidding system shutdowns that may occur.

Live Online Auctions (Online Only Auction with Multiple Bidding Platforms)
Auction is open for pre-bidding until the start of the auction at which time pre-bidding will cease and the auction will go live at the auction center (no live audience, just our auctioneer and auction staff). When the auction goes live, lots will be sold one at a time, in numerical order, by a live auctioneer who will be taking bids from multiple online bidding platforms, absentee and phone bids. During pre-bidding you are able to submit a max (maximum) bid. The bidding platform or our auction staff will bid on your behalf up to the maximum bid that you have entered.  Once the auction goes live if you wish to increase your bid you will have to wait until that lot opens for bidding and enter any additional bids manually.

Absentee Bidding
For those unable to attend the auction, Alderfer Auction offers the absentee bid service as a convenience to our patrons. Alderfer Auction will not be held responsible for error or failure to execute the bid(s). Absentee bids must be in writing and a fifty dollar ($50) minimum bid is required per item.

Phone Bidding
Phone bids must be in writing. All phone bids are required to open at $250 or half of the published estimate (whichever is greater and no less than $250). We suggest that phone and absentee bids be made 24 hours in advance to allow time for processing.

  • Everyone leaving an absentee/phone bid must be willing to leave their credit card number to assure payment of a successful bid(s) is received by the end of the next day following an auction.
  • Illegible bid(s) will be disregarded.
  • Applicable sales tax will be added to the sales total unless a tax-exempt number is on file in our office by the day of the auction.
  • Applicable Buyer’s Premium will be added to each purchase.
  • All successful bid(s) requested to be shipped to the buyer will be sent by an in-house or third party shipper and billed by the shipper.
  • Buyer is responsible to make shipping arrangements.
  • Bids are executed in competition with the audience on an alternate basis. Due to uncertainties of bidding, a lot may sell to the audience for the same amount authorized by the absentee bid. To avoid this possibility, the absentee bidder may authorize Alderfer Auction to increase their bid by one increment by placing a (+) sign beside the bid price.
  • Merchandise is to be removed from the Auction location during the specific auction’s stated pick-up dates and times.
  • Alderfer Auction offers the absentee/phone bid service as a convenience to our patrons who are unable to attend the auction.
  • Alderfer Auction will not be held responsible for error or failure to execute the bid.
  • All items are sold as is without warranty or guarantee.

20th C. Modern & Design

Mid- Century Modern furniture has stood the test of time.

Edward Wormley

“Modernism means freedom—freedom to mix, to choose, to change, to embrace the new but to hold fast to what is good.” Straight from the designer’s mouth. Edward Wormley was a leading American furniture designer for over four decades. He began his life in a small town outside of Chicago & later attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He went on to work for the interior design studio at Marshall Field & Company department store. He was later recruited by Dunbar where he quickly rose in the ranks to become their Director of Design. This pairing proved ideal & Wormley stayed in the position, creating iconic furniture pieces, for over thirty years.

We Have a Plan for Real Estate via Auction

Selling real estate has traditionally been a time consuming process for both the seller and buyer. Negotiating over price, terms and contingencies is a lengthy and often very frustrating process. Auction helps to simplify the process by allowing the marketplace to determine the sales price through competitive bidding and by offering the property with predetermined non-negotiable terms that have no contingencies.

Why Sell via Auction?

  • Seller receives 100% of the sale price, buyer pays commission
  • The buyers come prepared to buy.
  • The seller knows exactly when the property will sell. Known settlement date which can close within 30-45 day after the auction.
  • Seller knows that property will be sold at true market value.
  • All potential buyers at one location at the same time.
  • Accelerates the sale of your property.
  • Seller establishes terms and conditions of the sale and eliminates long-term carrying costs, including taxes and maintenance.
  • Property is sold with no mortgage or home contingencies.
  • Alderfer Auction will market your property to thousands of potential buyers.
  • Ensures an aggressive marketing campaign that increases interest and availability.
  • Creates competition among potential buyers.
  • The price a property brings at auction can exceed the price of a negotiated sale price.
  • Eliminates numerous and unscheduled showings.
  • Convert property to cash quickly.
  • Maximizes bidding in today's competitive market

What is the Best Plan?

We will help you determine the best option for your type of property.

Absolute Auction
A property will absolutely sell to the highest bidder regardless of the price.

Auction with Reserve
The property is being offered subject to the seller accepting or rejecting the high bid.

Minimum Opening Bid Auction
In this type of auction a minimum selling price is established prior to the auction that is acceptable by the seller.

Sealed Bid Auction
This type of auction is where bidders submit their confidential bids by the auction date deadline. Bidders do not know how much the other auction participants have bid. The highest bidder is typically declared the winner of the bidding process.

It's a Win-Win for the Seller and Buyer!

Alderfer Auction has built relationships with lawyers, banks, institutions and individuals who need to settle an estate, partnership dissolution, insurance evaluation, equitable distribution or market evaluation.

Each appraisal report is written in compliance to the government standards of USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice). Each of our appraisers have gone through vigorous training and have earned designations in their field. Designations include CAI (Certified Auctioneers Institute), MPPA (Master Personal Property Appraiser) and CES (Certified Estate Specialists). Alderfer Auction is also a proud member of many professional organizations including the AAA (Appraisers Association of America- accredited member), the NAA (National Auctioneers Association) and the PAA (Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association).

Appraisals are needed for various reasons. Some are needed by clients and the IRS for estate tax purposes or for a charitable contribution or gift tax. In this case, the value used is a Fair Market Value. Fair Market Value (FMV) is defined as the price at which property would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller. For Estate Tax appraisals, the IRS has very specific guidelines on what information they need and who can provide the appraisal. To ensure the needs of our client meet the IRS requirements, all of our reports are USPAP compliant. Others need an appraisal report for Insurance purposes so that their possessions are properly insured. This type of report uses Retail Replacement Value. Retail Replacement Value (RRV) is defined as the amount it would cost to replace an item with one of similar and like quality, purchased in the most appropriate marketplace in a limited amount of time.

For Firearms: The Alderfer Auction Firearm Specialists can provide written appraisals to reflect fair market value for insurance purposes, equitable distribution, and family division reasons.

We offer many Types of Written Appraisal Reports including:

Estate tax or planning
Insurance
Charitable Contribution or Gift
Damage or Loss of Value
Family Division
Equitable Distribution

FAQ’s

What is the difference between a valuation and an appraisal?
Valuation is defined as an estimation of something's worth, especially one given by an appraiser while appraisal is defined as an expert estimate of the value of something. These sound like very similar definitions; however, the words are not synonymous. A valuation is generally given verbally and is an estimate of an items fair market value. This is a useful tool for someone who is looking to sell personal property. An appraisal is also an opinion of value however, this information is then presented to a client in a professional, written report that can be relied upon by the client, the IRS and other intended users named in the report. People commonly need written appraisal reports for estate tax reporting, insurance purposes and for tax purposes when a charitable contribution in made.

How do you charge for appraisals?
Alderfer’s rates are competitive and can be hourly, per diem or a flat rate.

What do we appraise?
Residential Contents, Antiques, Fine Art, Firearms, Military, Dolls, Coins, Automobiles, Historical Documents and Autographs, 20th C. Design, Jewelry, Musical Instruments and more.

What we do NOT appraise.
In the event we are not qualified in a specific field, the team of specialists Alderfer Auction is happy to refer you to a trusted professional in that field. In the state of Pennsylvania, the requirements for appraising Real Estate are different from Personal Property. Unfortunately, we are not able to perform this service.

Simulcast Auctions are conducted in front of a live audience. During these events each item presented in the auction is also available for bidding in an online venue hosted by a third party provider such as www.liveauctioneers.com, www.invaluable.com, www.proxybid.com. While the auctioneer is receiving bids from an assembled audience, the auctioneer is also taking bids from bidders who are bidding through the third-party providers in real time or by advance bidding. Following the auction the successful bidders are notified and payment arrangements are made; applicable buyer’s premium applies.

Storage Fees
Effective February 13, 2017, any items left at the Auction Center for more than two weeks following the auction date will incur storage fees at a rate of $10.00 per lot, per week, regardless of the size or value of the lot. Storage fees will begin on the 15th day regardless of payment status.

Telephone Bidding
Phone bids must be in writing. All phone bids are required to start at $250 or half of the published estimate.  We suggest that phone and absentee bids be made 24 hours in advance to allow time for processing.

Terms and Conditions
The rules of the auction and certain aspects of the Purchase & Sale Agreement that are published, read and agreed upon by potential bidders prior to an auction sale.

Timed Auction
A timed auction is an online only sale run largely by computer. Lots are placed for sale online for a defined period of time, allowing bidders to register and then place maximum bids on items. The computer bids on behalf of the bidder against any competition, from the lowest possible bid to the maximum bid specified. Bidders are notified if they have been outbid. This provides the option to increase their bid should they so choose. When the pre-set time is up, the auction ends and the highest bidder on each lot is notified that he has won.

Withdraw / Pass (No Sale)
Failure to reach the reserve price or insufficient bidding.

FAQ

Question: Can anyone go to an auction?

Answer:
At Alderfer, all auctions are public events and everyone is welcome.

Question: What kinds of items are sold at auction?

Answer:
Quite simply, if something can be sold, it has probably been sold at auction. Alderfer Auction & Appraisal sells antiques, fine art, firearms, automobiles, furniture, vintage items, dolls, coins, stamps, jewelry, books, toys, business equipment and other various collections.

Question: Are auctioneers licensed and bonded?

Answer:
In Pennsylvania all auctioneers are required to be licensed and bonded by the state. In addition, Alderfer auctioneers are involved in continuing education classes and have been awarded several certifications. Our auctioneers are also members of the National Auctioneers Association, Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association, and the Lehigh Valley Society of Auctioneers.

Question: What is a Buyer’s Premium?

Answer:
A Buyer’s Premium is a percentage of the high bid that is added to the high bid to establish the final sale price.

Question: What is an “absolute” auction?

Answer:
An absolute auction is an auction where all property is sold to the highest bidder, regardless of price. If an item isn’t selling it is grouped with the next item for sale so all items sell.

Question: What is a “reserve”?

Answer:
A reserve is a confidential minimum price that the seller is willing to accept for an item. In an auction, the auctioneer is only obligated to sell the item once the bid amount meets or exceeds the reserve price.

Question: Do I have to register when I come to an auction?

Answer:
You only have to register if you would like to bid in the auction.

Question: What must I do to bid at an auction?

Answer:
When you arrive at the auction site, look for the registration area where you must provide adequate identification to receive a bidder’s number, terms and conditions, listing of the items (if applicable) and a schedule. Your bidding number must be shown to the auctioneer each time you bid.

Question: How do I know how much to bid?

Answer:
It is important to arrive at the auction early enough so you can inspect the items you are interested in. Since many items are sold “as is – where is,” it is critical that you examine items for condition, size, color, etc. Based on your examination, establish a value you are comfortable with. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. With online auctions the next possible bid will be shown on the screen.

Question: Can I preview the items before the auction?

Answer:
Yes. Generally you may preview the items the days before the auction. This information is available on the website.

Question: How do I bid?

Answer:
In order to bid at an auction, you need to make the auctioneer aware of you. To do this, hold up your bidder card or raise your hand. If the auctioneer does not immediately see you, shout “Yes.” The auctioneer will then take your bid and turn to seek another bid. If another bid is received, the auctioneer will return to you to ask if you want to bid again. Simply continue to say “Yes” to stay in the bidding.

Question: How do I stop bidding?

Answer:
To remove yourself from the bidding process, simply shake your head “No” when the auctioneer makes eye contact with you.

Question: Will I be able to understand the auctioneer?

Answer:
The “chant” of a good auctioneer is easily understood. The chant is merely a series of numbers connected by “filler” words to create a rhythm and make it pleasing to listen to. A basic chant tells the audience the current bid and the next bid being asked.

Question: How and when do I pay for the items I purchased?

Answer:
At Alderfer, bidders pay for their items when they are ready to leave. Payment may be made in cash, credit card, debit card, and personal checks (with approval). Credit cards are automatically charged for items purchased on Alderfer Online Only Auctions.

Question: What about removal of items from the auction?

Answer:
When you buy an item at the auction you are responsible for it. All items need to be removed the day of the auction. If you purchase large items and need assistance in moving, please inquire about our delivery service. If you need assistance to load large items into your own vehicle, simply ask one of the Alderfer personnel.

How to Bid & Buy

Become a Bidder – Buyer Information

Buyers must register for a bidding number by giving name, address, phone number, and identification acceptable to us. Please show your bidding number to the auctioneer after each purchase you make.

The highest bidder shall be the buyer, and if any dispute arises between two or more bidders, the auctioneer shall decide the buyer or immediately put the item up for sale again.  In the event of a tie between an online bidder and the floor bidder, the floor bidder will take precedence.  The auctioneer’s decision will be binding and final.

Some lots are offered subject to a reserve, which is a confidential minimum price below which such a lot will not be sold. The record of sale, kept by the auctioneer and clerk, will be taken as absolute and final in all disputes.

1. Live Bidding
Live bidding is the traditional method of bidding at our auction center.  Prior to bidding, all bidders must register to receive a bidder number. To bid in the auction, simply raise your bidder number for the auctioneer to see. Successful bidders will collect and pay for their items as full payment is required on auction day.

2. Online Bidding
Online bidding allows you to bid via the internet from the comfort of your home. An Online Only Auction takes place over an extended period of time versus a Live and Online Auction which allows you to bid in select live auctions via the internet.

We understand computers can be confusing and frustrating. Below are a few steps that will help you to navigate the bidding process.

Step 1. Use a Qualified Browser

The browser is the door that connects your computer or device to the world-wide web.

  • We have found that using Internet Explorer (see the icon below) is NOT the optimal browser. This browser is prone to viruses and will not allow you to access certain parts of the bidding experience.
  • Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari (see the icons below) are excellent choices for a browser. Our system has been optimized to function on all three of these.

Step 2. Bid via Desktop or App

The mobile experience may differ slightly from the desktop or PC experience. In either case, click on the "Bid Online Now" link to enter the auction

3. Live AND Online Auctions

Live and Online Auctions are conducted in front of a live audience. During these events each item presented in the auction is also available for bidding in an online venue hosted by the Alderfer Online Bidding platform or a third party provider.

While the auctioneer is receiving bids from an assembled audience, the auctioneer is also taking bids from bidders who are bidding through the Alderfer Online Bidding platform or third-party providers in real time or by advance bidding. Following the auction, the successful bidders are notified by email and payment arrangements are made; applicable buyer’s premium applies.

4. Live Online Auctions (Online Only Auction with Multiple Bidding Platforms):

Auction is open for pre-bidding until (date, time), at which time pre-bidding will cease and the auction will go live at the auction center (no live audience, just our auctioneer and auction staff).

5. Absentee Bidding

For those unable to attend the auction, Alderfer’s offers the absentee bid service as a convenience to our patrons.  Alderfer’s will not be held responsible for error or failure to execute the bid(s).  Absentee bids must be in writing and a fifty dollar ($50) minimum bid is required per item.

Alderfer Auction coins and currency highlights

Coin Auctions

These are some of the many benefits of selling coins at auction including quality of merchandise, exposure through mass media marketing, diversity of buyers through simulcast auctions and reputation. Alderfer Auction offers buyers a pre-auction preview for discriminating collectors to evaluate and discern the purchases.

"I LOVE your service because you were able to help in so many areas - appraisals, moving things to multiple locations and floor plan. You were very helpful in assisting both my mother AND myself. I will definitely recommend Alderfer Auction to friends who may be moving elderly parents or downsizing." - Transitions & Downsizing Customer
