If you are planning a transition into a new living situation, downsizing is often part of the equation. The task that lies before you, can seem overwhelming. It helps if you have a plan. The first step is to decide what you are taking with you to your new home. Our Transition Team can assist with this step by measuring your furniture and making a floor plan of your new space to show how it will fit. Next you will want to decide which items you would like to give to your family and friends. There may also be items in your home that you would like to sell. An Alderfer Auction salesperson can do a free walk-through, in-home consultation and provide an estimated value of your belongings and options. You can also consider donating items to various organizations. Lastly, a clean-out company can assist you with cleaning out your home and preparing it for the new owner. Alderfer Auction Transition and Downsizing Team can assist you with each step of the process, including packing and unpacking the items that you are taking. Making a transition involves many decisions. Real Estate

The next step to your journey, is how to sell your largest, lifetime asset, your real estate property. When selling Real Estate by the auction method, the seller will be setting the terms and conditions of the sale, timelines and the property will be sold as-is. Because the property is sold as-is, there are no back and forth negotiations after the property is sold at auction. You, the seller, are in control! Our auction company will offer open houses and showings for the property. We also offer Property Information Packets for all bidders interested in the property at the open house and on our website. We have an aggressive and proven marketing plan for your home that includes professional photography, sales materials, online listings, search engines, advertising, social and more. We also provide pertinent inspections to help the buyer make a more informed bid. To further incentivize buyers, realtors and brokers, Alderfer Auction even provides compensation to the winning bidder’s broker. The seller receives 100% of the sale price, the buyer pays commission. There are no other extraneous fees to the seller.

Alderfer Auction will take care of all the pertinent paperwork to make sure the settlement process runs smoothly. Settlement date is determined by the seller, so that will help ease any extra carrying costs. The seller will only have 1 or 2 point-of-contacts at Alderfer Auction through the whole entire process of transitions, personal property and real estate. I Want to Buy a Home at Auction, Now What?

Auction does not mean foreclosure or a distressed home. The aucton method makes it easy to buy real estate property. Like any large purchase, you need to do your research and be informed. 

First, every auction has terms and conditions that will serve as the contract for the purchase of the real estate. Review the document, understand the terms and if you have questions call the auction specialist. The auction specialist will guide you through the process for better understanding. 

Alderfer Auction will have available times for the buyers to view the property. You will receive a property information packet which will include professional photography, room measurements, seller’s disclosure, title search and any inspections that were elected to be done for the property. The buyer is allowed to bring a contractor and/or inspector during the showing times.

Many people who are not familiar with buying real estate through auction say, “auctions are cash only sales”. This is false. The majority of our properties go through the typical mortgage lending process. If you need to obtain financing, you will need to apply for pre-approval for a conventional loan. This will give you the amount you are able to bid on the property, without going over the allowable loan amount.  Knowing your finances before you bid is very important. The nice part is that auctions do not have mortgage or appraisal contingencies. Depending on the terms of the auction, certified funds will need to be shown to the auction company in order to register and bid on the real estate. This shows the auction house that the buyer is eligible to purchase and bid on the home.

It is auction day! The crowd is humming and the auction goers are going through a final home walk-through preview. People are registering and asking their last-minute questions. Some of our properties are sold live and online, where as some are live on location only. If the property is being sold online also, a staff member will be executing bids from a computer online. The online bidders have to make the same preparations as live bidders to prove they have certified funds to make the purchase. Everyone has the same opportunity to buy the property. 

The auction starts! The auction only takes 20 minutes, so don’t be late! There will be a quick overview of the auction’s terms and conditions, which are provided at the beginning of the property listing. The auctioneer starts her/his chant and off we go! The auctioneer will take a moment to pause to walk around the crowd and see if anyone has anymore questions. Once, all final questions are answered, the auctioneer re-opens the bidding so the buyers have one more opportunity to put place their last bid on the property. The highest and best bid wins! 

The auction is over! The winning bidder and seller will sign all of the paperwork and transfer the predetermined deposit with certified funds. The certified funds will be held by the auction company in a non-bearing interest bank account. The winning bidder will receive a copy of the paperwork so that they can start the mortgage process. Depending on the terms and condition a settlement date will be set. This time frame will be an ample amount of time to receive a mortgage. The buyer is allowed to choose his/her own closing company for settlement day. The auction specialist is also available to help the buyer with any questions as well. 

Settlement day is here!  The buyer and seller will come together to sign-over the deed of the property along with all pertinent paperwork. The auction company will bring the deposit money that was placed day of the auction. The deposit check is made out to the closing company to go towards the closing costs. Keys are exchanged and the property is officially yours! Congratulations! 

Myth #1: Real Estate Auction Means Foreclosure.

Answer #1: False. 

Homes that we sell are auctioned by choice, not by bank mandate. Our sellers chose the auction method because they want to take control of the sale of their home.  An auction will establish the terms and conditions of the home, i.e a timeline of events for which the home will be sold. Open houses and the actual auction. The property is sold without contingencies. Contingencies such as home inspection or a mortgage contingency are not part of the auction process.  The home is being sold as is and our auction company will provide a seller’s disclosure, and other inspections to help with the buying and selling of the property.  The property is not a “sight unseen” auction like a sheriff sale.  Alderfer Auction will provide open houses and showings to help the buyer make an informed bid.   

Auctions are another viable and competitive way of selling real property.

 

Myth #2: Auction Homes Must Be Purchased In Full, Cash Only.

Answer #2: False.

Majority of our Real Estate Auctions have gone through a mortgage process.  After the auction has ended, and depending on the terms of the auction, the buyer is allowed 30-45 days for settlement.  That is an ample amount of time for a mortgage company to process and the closing company to aid in your home buying needs.  A deposit in certified funds is required to be allowed to bid at our auctions. The deposit will be held by Alderfer Auction and will be presented back at settlement for closing.   We work with the mortgage and closing company every step of the way to ensure a quick and seamless transaction.

 

Myth #3: Do I Need a Real Estate Agent to Buy Through Auction?

Answer #3: False.

A real estate agent is not needed to buy through the auction method.  The Alderfer Auction team is here to help and answer any questions you may have.

1. Can I get a mortgage when I buy via auction or must I pay cash? You can get a mortgage when buying via auction. Only a deposit is required day of auction at time of purchase.

2. Are all real estate auctions bank-owned or foreclosures? No. Many of the homes we sell are sold on behalf of estates, or sellers who are transitioning to another home.

3. Can I make an offer and buy the house before it goes to auction? No. In the best interest of our client to get the highest bid possible, we are unable to accept offers.

4. Do I need a Realtor if I'm buying or selling through auction? No. Our Real Estate Team will guide you through the entire process.

5. Can I bid online or do I need to be present at the auction? You may bid - online - preregistration is required to do so. See auction listing for details.

6. Can I sell the contents of my home, as well as, the home itself? Yes! We conduct personal property auctions and can coordinate that with the real estate auction.

By bidding at Alderfer Auction whether it be live, online, onsite, absentee or phone bid, you agree to be bound by Alderfer Auction’s Terms & Conditions stated here forth. Addendum statements made day of auction take precedence over previously printed materials.

The validity and interpretation of any of the terms and provisions of this agreement or of the rights and duties of the parties under this agreement shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and venue of all proceedings shall occur in Montgomery County, PA.


1. Bidding Qualifications


Live Bidding
Buyers must register for a bidding number by giving name, address, phone number, and identification acceptable to us. Please show your bidder number to the auctioneer after each purchase you make.

The highest bidder shall be the buyer, and if any dispute arises between two or more bidders, the auctioneer shall decide the buyer or immediately put the item up for sale again. In the event of a tie between an online bidder and the floor bidder, the successful bidder will be at the Auctioneer’s discretion. The auctioneer’s decision will be binding and final.

Some lots are offered subject to a reserve, which is a confidential minimum price below which such a lot will not be sold. The record of sale, kept by the auctioneer and clerk, will be taken as absolute and final in all disputes.

Simulcast Bidding
Simulcast Auctions are conducted in front of a live audience. During these events each item presented in the auction is also available for bidding in an online venue hosted by a third party provider. While the auctioneer is receiving bids from an assembled audience, phone and absentee bidders, the auctioneer is also taking bids from bidders who are bidding through the third-party providers in real time or by advance bidding. Following the auction the successful bidders are notified and payment arrangements are made; applicable buyer’s premium applies.

At its discretion, Alderfer Auction may also accept bids from approved internet bidders. Alderfer Auction or any of its staff shall not be held responsible or liable for any human or technical bidding errors, or internet bidding system shutdowns that may occur.

Alderfer Online Only Bidding
Alderfer Auction sometimes uses the services of a third party auction platform for online bidding. Please refer to third party website for how to register and bid online. Buyer is responsible for all online bidding. Alderfer Auction cannot place bids for the buyer as the buyer must properly register and bid through the third party platform.

At its discretion, Alderfer Auction may also accept bids from approved internet bidders. Alderfer Auction or any of its staff shall not be held responsible or liable for any human or technical bidding errors, or internet bidding system shutdowns that may occur.

Absentee Bidding
For those unable to attend the auction, Alderfer Auction offers the absentee bid service as a convenience to our patrons. Alderfer Auction will not be held responsible for error or failure to execute the bid(s). Absentee bids must be in writing and a fifty dollar ($50) minimum bid is required per item.

Phone Bidding
Phone bids must be in writing. All phone bids are required to open at $250 or half of the published estimate (whichever is greater and no less than $250). We suggest that phone and absentee bids be made 24 hours in advance to allow time for processing.

  • Everyone leaving an absentee/phone bid must be willing to leave their credit card number to assure payment of a successful bid(s) is received by the end of the next day following an auction.
  • Illegible bid(s) will be disregarded.
  • Applicable sales tax will be added to the sales total unless a tax-exempt number is on file in our office by the day of the auction.
  • Applicable Buyer’s Premium will be added to each purchase.
  • All successful bid(s) requested to be shipped to the buyer will be sent by an in-house or third party shipper and billed by the shipper.
  • Buyer is responsible to make shipping arrangements.
  • Bids are executed in competition with the audience on an alternate basis. Due to uncertainties of bidding, a lot may sell to the audience for the same amount authorized by the absentee bid. To avoid this possibility, the absentee bidder may authorize Alderfer Auction to increase their bid by one increment by placing a (+) sign beside the bid price.
  • Merchandise is to be removed from the Auction location during the specific auction’s stated pick-up dates and times.
  • Alderfer Auction offers the absentee/phone bid service as a convenience to our patrons who are unable to attend the auction.
  • Alderfer Auction will not be held responsible for error or failure to execute the bid.
  • All items are sold as is without warranty or guarantee.


Alderfer Auction shall have the right to accept absentee and phone bids for any items consigned for any particular auction. Alderfer Auction reserves the right not to execute any absentee bid at its discretion and to have no liability for any inadvertent failure to execute any such bids.

Generally, bidding increments are made as follows although Auctioneer has the discretion and authority to change. Online bidding increments may vary, see each auction for details.

For Example: When price is at $150, the next bid increment is $160. When price is $250, the next bid increment is $275. When the price is $500, the next accepted bid is $550.


2. Buyer’s Premium, Sales Tax & Payment

Applicable buyer’s premium is applied per auction. The hammer price, buyer’s premium and sales tax shall be added together to reach the total purchase price for an item. PA residents pay 6% sales tax unless a Tax Exempt Form is on file.

Upon a successful online bid the credit card registered for said online bidding platform whether Alderfer Online or a 3rd party platform will be billed automatically for all winning bids within the auction.

Acceptable forms of payments are Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, PayPal (with the exception of Firearms, Militaria & Sporting Auctions), wire transfer, money order, cash and check.

Payments are due immediately upon purchase and before exiting the facility. Returned checks will be assessed a $35 charge for insufficient funds.

Successful online bidders, who bid through a third party online bidding platform, will be assessed a 5% surcharge. This charge offsets the fee collected by the third party platform. For more information regarding this charge please see third party website for terms.


3. Pick-Up and Shipping

Alderfer Auction offers onsite shipping subject to limitations. Shipping, handling and insurance fees are additional to the total purchase price. Fees must be paid in advance by credit card. If you choose to ship your item, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING SHIPPING ARRANGEMENTS.

All lots must be removed from the premises of Alderfer Auction no later than 14 days after an auction.
If you choose to pick-up your lots at the Auction Center, our regular hours are Monday – Friday 8:00AM – 5:00PM. Please call 24 hours in advance to schedule a pick-up time. Packing materials are the responsibility of the purchaser.

Unpaid items still remaining at our auction center 30 calendar days after the auction date will be considered abandoned and will be consigned to a future auction without additional notice to the purchaser.

For Fine & Decorative Arts and Collector's auctions, please contact Alderfer Auction to request shipping. While we try to provide shipping for most items that our auctions offer, some items are large, heavy, or more fragile in nature and will need to be shipped by a third party. In addition, Alderfer Auction does not have an export license so all international shipments valued at $2,500.00 or higher, including hammer price and buyer’s premium, must be shipped by a third-party shipper.
Jewelry Shipment Policy: Jewelry will not be shipped overnight under any circumstances. Jewelry shipments may take up to 7 – 10 business days and will not ship until the payment has cleared; and thus, extend the delivery period.

Alderfer Auction is not responsible for any damage or loss that occurs via a third party shipper.

Alderfer Auction may refuse shipping an item due to the size, weight, and fragile nature of certain items. We do not offer in-house shipping for: framed canvas paintings, glassware, statues/figurines made of glass, porcelain, or other breakable materials. We understand for some items there may be exceptions, however it is at the discretion of the shipping department to determine which items can be shipped and which items will require third-party shipping.



4. Warranty & Condition Reports


All announcements made on auction day shall take precedence over previously distributed information, print or electronic media.
All items are sold "AS-IS, where-is" with no warranty expressed or implied. Descriptions are believed to be accurate but not guaranteed. Please bid accordingly if you are uncertain of the condition or use of an item. Statements by Alderfer Auction regarding the condition of objects are for guidance only and should not be relied upon as statements of fact, and do not constitute a representation or assumption of liability by Alderfer Auction. Photographs may also be used to represent condition of an item.
While every effort is made to determine provenance, authenticity and condition, it is the responsibility of the Bidder to arrive at their own conclusion prior to bidding. Provenance and authenticity including attributions are guaranteed by neither the consignor nor Alderfer Auction.
Alderfer Auction strongly encourages bidders to personally inspect all lots. The Bidder should also review online descriptions, listings and/or catalogs to obtain necessary information. Bidders may contact Alderfer Auction for a condition report at ConditionReport@AlderferAuction.com. Alderfer Auction will attempt to furnish one, but shall not be liable for failing to do so. All auction inquiries must be received a minimum of 48 hours prior to the start of the auction.


5. Estimates


Item estimates provided in print or electronic media are not a representation or a prediction of the hammer price that will be realized at auction, which may be substantially different from our original estimates. We shall not be liable for any discrepancies between our estimates and a price realized.

Any appraisal, estimate or opinion expressed by any principal or employee of Alderfer Auction, consultant to Alderfer Auction, or other person with respect to the anticipated auction price of any item or merchandise is a statement of opinion only and Alderfer Auction makes no guarantee, warranty or agreement with respect to the sale price of any item.


6. Artwork Authorship & Authenticity


General

If we say "c." for circa, a certain date, then it was made within 25 years of that date.
Measurements are given within 1" of actual size.

Attributed to- In our best judgment, the work may be by the artist.
Circle of- In our best judgment, a work of the period of the artist and closely related to the artist's style.
School of- In our best judgment, a work by a pupil or follower of the artist.
After- In our best judgment, a copy of the known work of the artist.
In the Manner of- This painting represents the style of the named artist but was painted at a later date; the authorship is unknown.


Authenticity
Signature- The signature, inscriptions and dates are transcribed in print as they appear and are located as follows:

7. Clocks and Watches


Due to the sensitive and mechanical nature of clocks and watches, we do not guarantee them to be in running or working condition.
8. Furniture
If we say "Chippendale Mahogany Chest of Drawers," we represent that the piece was made during that period.
If we say "Chippendale Style Mahogany Chest of Drawers," we represent that the piece looks like the period mentioned, but it was crafted at a later date.


9. Firearms


Alderfer Auction is a Licensed Federal Firearms Dealer (FFL) located in southeastern Pennsylvania. Whether you are buying or selling firearms at Alderfer Auction you will be assured that your firearms have been processed according to the rigorous regulations established by the Federal Government. It is recommended that all Firearms be checked by a competent gunsmith before firing to ensure safe usage.

Registration Fees
A $15 per gun transaction fee will be assessed for gun registration; $10 per gun transaction fee thereafter which is in addition to the total purchase price.

Firearm Laws
All firearms are sold in accordance with Federal and Pennsylvania State Laws. All post 1898 (Modern) firearms must be registered in compliance with Federal and State Law. Purchasers of Modern firearms who are Pennsylvania residents must complete state and federal registration forms at Alderfer Auction, 501 Fairgrounds Rd., Hatfield, PA 19440, or provide a signed copy of a Federal Firearms License from a dealer that your purchase can be shipped to. FFL Dealers and out-of-state buyers must have in their possession on the day of sale, signed copies of their Federal Firearms License in order to accept same-day delivery of modern firearms. Buyers who act as agents for FFL dealers must have a letter of agency as well as a signed copy of the dealers Federal Firearms License (FFL). Internet bidders who are out-of-state buyers and FFL dealers must fax a current FFL license within 24 hours of the close of the sale to Alderfer Auction at 215-368-9055. Curio & Relic FFL licenses will be accepted on auction lots indicated in the description "(C&R)”.

Specific State Restrictions
Auctions may contain many firearms and items that are non-compliant (not allowed) in certain States. Alderfer Auction WILL NOT ship or SELL any of these items that are prohibited in any State. We are aware of these Sates and their Laws and it is the duty of each potential bidder to make sure they are allowed to own this legally in their respective States. Alderfer Auction WILL NOT convert or make any firearm compliant to meet a certain State's requirements. Listed here are state laws restricting the sale of certain high-capacity magazines. These are STATE laws, sometimes there are COUNTY or CITY laws with stricter restrictions. It is your responsibility to be or become familiar with local gun laws.
California: We do not ship, sell, or offer for sale any magazines over 10 rounds to anyone in California or anyone using a billing address in the state of California.
D.C.: We do not ship, sell, or offer for sale any magazines over 10 rounds to anyone in the District of Columbia or anyone using a billing address for the District of Columbia.
Hawaii: We do not ship, sell, or offer for sale any magazines over 10 rounds that may fit a handgun to anyone in Hawaii or anyone using a billing address in the state of Hawaii.
Illinois: We do not ship, sell, or offer for sale any magazines over 12 rounds to anyone in Chicago, IL or anyone using a billing address in Chicago, IL. We do not ship, sell, or offer for sale any magazines over 15 rounds to anyone in Aurora, IL or anyone using a billing address in Aurora, IL.
Maryland: We do not ship, sell, or offer for sale any magazines over 20 rounds to anyone in Maryland or anyone using a billing address in the state of Maryland.
Massachusetts: We do not ship, sell, or offer for sale any magazines over 10 rounds to anyone in Massachusetts or anyone using a billing address in the state of Massachusetts.
New Jersey: We do not ship, sell, or offer for sale any magazines over 10 rounds to anyone in New Jersey or anyone using a billing address in the state of New Jersey.
New York: We do not ship, sell, or offer for sale any magazines over 10 rounds to anyone in New York or anyone using a billing address in the state of New York.
Any firearms sold containing prohibited magazines as mentioned above will be shipped less the banned magazine, no refunds will be offered.
Purchasers may inspect the merchandise and are urged to do so. The Auctioneer makes no warranty as to condition and shall not be responsible for any defects in any Lot. Any used firearm should be inspected by a competent gunsmith for safety, function, and proper ammunition type/size before attempting to fire. Any description of mechanical function or condition does NOT mean the gun has been inspected or tested for firing capabilities. All goods are exposed for Public Exhibition and for Internet buyer's, condition is described in the listings.


Firearm Shipping
Shipping, handling, registration and insurance fees are additional to the total purchase price. Fees must be paid in advance by credit card before items are shipped. Because Alderfer Auction is FFL approved, all shipping, packing and insurance are handled by Alderfer Auction. Costs are as follows:
 

Packing fee of $25 for the first long gun
$10 for each additional long gun
$11 for the first handgun
$6 fee for each additional handgun


UPS shipping and insurance fees will then be applied to each item. To economize we will pack multiple items of similar size and type together if possible. All items will be shipped UPS-ground or required overnight parcel for handguns. Insurance is an additional fee of 1% of hammer price plus buyer’s premium. We ONLY ship to the continental U.S.

Any winning bidder wanting to ship a firearm or firearms outside of the continental United States must make arrangements with an FFL Importer/Exporter. The bidder is responsible for all shipping costs related to Alderfer Auction requirements as stated above to the Importer/Exporter, and all costs in accordance with the Importer/Exporter in shipping the firearm(s) to said bidder.

11. Alderfer Online Onsite Auctions


Alderfer Auction conducts auctions at various different onsite locations through online only timed auctions. The terms and conditions mentioned herein apply to these auctions along with the requirements below regarding merchandise pick-up.

Designated pick-up times are established for customers to remove their purchased items. Schedule a pick-up time via www.Appointy.com or call 215.393.3000. www.Appointy.com instructions will be included in your invoice.

NO REFUNDS will be given on purchased items that are not picked up during the designated pick-up time.

Delivery
Delivery fees are additional to the total purchase price. Please call or email for delivery fees for your particular lot(s). Fees must be paid in advance by credit card. If you choose to have your item(s) delivered, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING DELIVERY ARRANGEMENTS. Please call us to arrange these services no later than 24 hours prior to the auction pick-up time.

12. Limitations of Liability


Alderfer Auction is not liable for any breach or default by the consignor of a Lot. Alderfer Auction may withdraw any item before the sale if there is doubt as to the authenticity, title, or laws restricting the sale of the item or the accuracy of the Consignor’s representations.



13. Governing Law


Pennsylvania State Law prohibits any owner from bidding on their own merchandise to enhance the value. “Bidding in” or bidding on behalf of the Consignor shall be grounds for discontinuation of the auction and a claim for any resulting damages including, but not limited to, a reasonable amount for lost commissions.

20th C. Modern & Design

Clean lines, organic curves, minimalism & functionality are the building blocks of great Mid-Century Modern design. Stemming from the Bauhaus style in Germany & the International style which grew from the Bauhaus movement in America, the look can be dated in its height of popularity from the mid-1930’s to the mid-1960’s. This is when the original designs were created & began being manufactured to the eagerly waiting masses. Iconic designers emerged from this time period of creative ingenuity, like the great Edward Wormley, Harry Bertoia, Charles & Ray Eames, George Nakashima, Paul McCobb & John Saladino. The list can continue on as there were many designers making a name for themselves by creating new pieces in this style. In particular designers from Germany who fled their country during & after World War II, immigrating to America & bringing their design style with them.

 

Mid- Century Modern furniture has stood the test of time. The look of modernity personified has remained fresh & desired since its inception. The pieces have been copied many times over from their original predecessors, but rarely have the originals been bettered by this resurgence. Paul McCobb (1917-1969) was one of the leading contemporary furniture designers on the American design scene in the 1950s and 1960s.He designed a range of multi-functional furniture over a total of twenty years. McCobb also designed accessories & textiles. Paul McCobb was the recipient of MoMA's Good Design Award five times between 1950 and 1955 as well as of the Philadelphia Museum of Arts' Contribution to Better Design Award in 1959.

“Modernism means freedom—freedom to mix, to choose, to change, to embrace the new but to hold fast to what is good.” Straight from the designer’s mouth. Edward Wormley was a leading American furniture designer for over four decades. He began his life in a small town outside of Chicago & later attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He went on to work for the interior design studio at Marshall Field & Company department store. He was later recruited by Dunbar where he quickly rose in the ranks to become their Director of Design. John F. Saladino is an American interior designer, furniture designer & garden designer based out of New York City. He attended Notre Dame & went on to further his education by receiving a degree from Yale School of Art & Architecture. Saladino went from university to studying with the Italian architect Piero Sartogo in Rome. In 1972 the designer created the Saladino Group, Inc & began designing iconic furniture for residential clients & corporate entities. Their mission: Stopping hunger so kids focus. Learn. Succeed. The Bean Bag Food Program provides weekend meal bags each week during the school year for students in the Souderton area school district. Part-Time Auction Assistant

Be a part of a growing team! Alderfer Auction is seeking a part-time Auction Assistant in a dynamic, fluid, customer-oriented field to assist in setting up and cataloguing Alderfer Online Only Auctions and to assist with other auctions as needed.  Great, professional, enthusiastic customer service is a MUST!

Job Responsibilities include: 

• Organize, separate and group items into lots, followed by tagging and measuring lots and individual items.

• Taking photographs of lots and giving detailed product descriptions using provided company iPads.

• May assist with auction previews.

• Will assist in the removal of items from the auction site and bringing items back to the auction center.

• Daily travel is required with the team but company transportation is provided.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Candidate should be hardworking, reliable, able to lift moderate to heavy items and able to stand for the better part of the day.

• Product knowledge of antiques and collectibles is desired.

• Should have a basic knowledge of mobile devices and iPads, however, training on specific software will be provided.

• Must be a team player, have a good attitude and excellent customer service skills.

Experience in auction services, antiques, collectibles, or related field is preferred but not required.

Each Online Onsite Auction will state its specific pick-up days, times and location.
All winning bidders will receive pick-up notification with their invoice.
In order to serve you more efficiently during the hours of pick-up, and to better assist all customers, we are implementing a timed pick-up schedule. These pick-up times are scheduled in order to help us move merchandise in a timely fashion. We greatly appreciate your help.

We Ship Select Items to Your Location
Select items can be shipped to your home or business. Alderfer Auction may refuse shipping an item due to the size, weight, and fragile nature of certain items. We do not offer in-house shipping for: framed canvas paintings, glassware, statues/figurines made of glass, porcelain, or other breakable materials. We understand for some items there may be exceptions, however it is at the discretion of the shipping department to determine which items can be shipped and which items will require third-party shipping. Please inquire about international shipments.

Why can’t you ship my item?
While we try to provide shipping for most items that our auctions offer, some items are more fragile in nature and we are more comfortable with a third party shipper to pack your items.

Who do we use to ship?
We provide in-house shipping through USPS and FedEx. Third party shippers include UPS and other local shippers.

How do I get my items shipped?
Shipping is an extra-fee service that Alderfer Auction provides and customers must request to have their items shipped. We never assume that you want shipping to accommodate address changes and those who are willing to pick up their items. You can contact us by emailing shipping@alderferauction.com, by submitting a shipping request form on our website, or by calling 215-393-3000 and asking for the shipping department.

What are your handling fees?
Handling fees are based on how long the packaging process takes and can be anywhere from $3.00 & up. Firearm shipments have a flat handling fee of $25.00 for the 1st long gun and $10.00 for each additional long gun. There is an $11.00 flat handling fee for the 1st hand gun and $6.00 for each additional handgun.

How do I pay for shipping?
If you request us to ship your item and we have your credit card on file, we will use that card for the shipping price unless otherwise specified. If we do not have your card on file, we will email you the shipping and handling cost with payment options.

Will I receive a tracking number?
Yes, if you provided an email address to us, you will receive a tracking number through either USPS or FedEx. If for some reason you do not receive one, contact us and we will be happy to look up your tracking number and email it to you.

How are shipping costs determined?
Costs are determined by box size, weight and insurance value.

Do you insure packages?
We automatically insure any package that has a value over $100.00. If you choose to waive the insurance to lower the cost, you must send an email to shipping@alderferauction.com to release us from any responsibility of damage that could potentially occur during shipment.

Do you offer express shipping?
Typically we do not offer expressing shipping except in rare cases. We will not offer express shipping on any gold or expensive jewelry.

Do you provide international shipping?
Yes, we will provide international shipping for items that do not have a high value. Each country has different value limits through the USPS. We do not have an export license, so if we are unable to provide in-house shipping on your item, we will refer you to a third party shipper who can assist you.

How do third party shippers work?
Once you contact a third party, please let us know who to release your items to by emailing shipping@alderferauction.com or by calling 215-393-3000. Alderfer Auction and the third party will then make arrangements for them to pick up your items. Once the items leave our auction house, the third party is responsible for packaging, shipping and arranging payments with you. You should also receive a tracking number through them.

Designations include CAI (Certified Auctioneers Institute), MPPA (Master Personal Property Appraiser) and CES (Certified Estate Specialists). Alderfer Auction is also a proud member of many professional organizations including the AAA (Appraisers Association of America- accredited member), the NAA (National Auctioneers Association) and the PAA (Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association).  

Appraisals are needed for various reasons. Some are needed by clients and the IRS for estate tax purposes or for a charitable contribution or gift tax. In this case, the value used is a Fair Market Value. Fair Market Value (FMV) is defined as the price at which property would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller. For Estate Tax appraisals, the IRS has very specific guidelines on what information they need and who can provide the appraisal. To ensure the needs of our client meet the IRS requirements, all of our reports are USPAP compliant. Others need an appraisal report for Insurance purposes so that their possessions are properly insured. This type of report uses Retail Replacement Value. Retail Replacement Value (RRV) is defined as the amount it would cost to replace an item with one of similar and like quality, purchased in the most appropriate marketplace in a limited amount of time.

What is the difference between a valuation and an appraisal?
Valuation is defined as an estimation of something's worth, especially one given by an appraiser while appraisal is defined as an expert estimate of the value of something. These sound like very similar definitions; however, the words are not synonymous. A valuation is generally given verbally and is an estimate of an items fair market value. This is a useful tool for someone who is looking to sell personal property. An appraisal is also an opinion of value however, this information is then presented to a client in a professional, written report that can be relied upon by the client, the IRS and other intended users named in the report. People commonly need written appraisal reports for estate tax reporting, insurance purposes and for tax purposes when a charitable contribution in made.

How do you charge for appraisals?
Alderfer’s rates are competitive and can be hourly, per diem or a flat rate.

In the state of Pennsylvania, the requirements for appraising Real Estate are different from Personal Property. Unfortunately, we are not able to perform this service.

Terminology

Abandoned Merchandise
Unpaid items still remaining at our Auction Center 30 calendar days after the auction date will be considered abandoned and will be consigned to a future auction without additional notice to the purchaser.

Absentee Bidding
For those unable to attend the auction, Alderfer’s offers the absentee bid service as a convenience to our patrons.  Alderfer’s will not be held responsible for error or failure to execute the bid(s).  Absentee bids must be in writing and a fifty dollar ($50) minimum bid is required per item.

Absolute Auction
An auction where the property is sold to the highest qualified bidder with no limiting conditions or amount. The seller may not bid personally or through an agent. Also known as an “auction without reserve.”

Appraisal
The act or process of estimating value.

As Is
Selling the property without warranties as to the current condition with all existing faults and imperfections. Buyers are solely responsible for examining and judging the property for their own protection. Otherwise known as “as is – where is” and “in its present condition.”

Auction
A method of selling property in a public forum through open and competitive bidding. 

Auction with Reserve or Minimum
An auction in which the seller or his agent reserves the right to accept or decline any and all bids. A minimum acceptable price may or may not be disclosed and the seller reserves the right to accept or decline any bid within a specified time.

Bid
A prospective buyer’s indication or offer of a price they are willing to pay to purchase property at auction. Bids are usually in standardized increments established by the auctioneer.

Bidder Number
A buyer must register for a bidding number by giving name, address, phone number and identification acceptable to us. Please show your bidding number to the auctioneer after each purchase you make.

Bidder’s Choice or Buyer’s Choice
A method of sale whereby the successful high bidder wins the right to choose an asset or assets from a grouping of similar or like-kind assets. After the high bidder’s selection, the asset is deleted from the group, and the second round of bidding commences, with the high bidder in round two choosing an asset, which is then deleted from the group and so on, until all assets are sold. 

Buyers Premium

A Buyer’s Premium is a percentage of the “hammer price” and will be added to each purchase to reach the final sale price. Buyers premiums may vary according to the commodity and services provided. The final sale price is subject to applicable sales tax. Payment is required day of auction in cash, approved check, or accepted credit card (MasterCard, VISA, Discover, American Express and PayPal).

Clerk
An individual employed by the auction firm to record what is sold and to whom it is sold and for what price.

Commission
The fee charged to the seller by the auctioneer for providing services, usually a percentage of the gross selling price of the personal property established by contract (the listing agreement) prior to the auction.

Conditions of Sale
The legal terms that govern the conduct of an auction, including acceptable methods of payment, terms, buyer’s premiums, possession, reserves and any other limiting factors of an auction. Usually included in published advertisements or announced by the auctioneer prior to the start of the auction, also known as “Terms & Conditions”.

Condition Report
A description of the imperfections of an object, particularly of the characteristics that might affect value. This is essential information for prospective bidders.

Contract
An agreement between two or more persons or entities which creates or modifies a legal relationship.

Consign
To enter a contract with the auction company to sell assets at public auction or private sale for a fee based on a commission/percentage of the final sale price.

Estimate
Presale estimate of value established to stimulate presale interest.

Fair Market Value
Price established through the competitive bidding process with a willing buyer and seller, in a well-advertised auction.

Gallery Auction / Estate Auction
Auction of property or properties owned by multiple sellers (living or deceased), offered through a common promotional campaign and auctioned in a single event. Takes place on the premises of Alderfer Auction or specified location. 

Hammer Price 
The highest bid accepted/the winning bid for a lot at auction/the price at which the auctioneer’s “hammer” falls. Note that this does not include the buyer's premium.

High Bidder
The highest bidder shall be the buyer. If any dispute arises between two or more bidders, the auctioneer shall decide the highest bidder or the item will immediately put up for sale again. In the event of a tie between an online bidder and the floor bidder, the floor bidder will take precedence. The auctioneer’s decision will be binding and final.

Live Auction
A way to bid in real time at auctions conducted in the auction center. Absentee bids and phone bids are accepted as well.

Live Bidding
Live bidding is the traditional method of bidding at our auction center.  Prior to bidding, all bidders must register to receive a bidder number. To bid in the auction, simply raise your bidder number for the auctioneer to see. Successful bidders will collect and pay for their items as full payment is required on auction day.

Live Online Auctions (Online Only Auction with Multiple Bidding Platforms)
Auction is open for pre-bidding until (date,time), at which time pre-bidding will cease and the auction will go live at the auction center (no live audience, just our auctioneer and auction staff). When the auction goes live, lots will be sold one at a time, in numerical order, by a live auctioneer who will be taking bids from multiple online bidding platforms, absentee and phone bids. During pre-bidding you are able to submit a max (maximum) bid. The bidding platform or our auction staff will bid on your behalf up to the maximum bid that you have entered.  Once the auction goes live if you wish to increase your bid you will have to wait until that lot opens for bidding and enter any additional bids manually.

No-Sale Fee
A marketing/handling fee paid by the seller of property offered at a reserve auction when the property does not sell. (See “Withdraw/Pass”)

Online Only Auctions 
Online only auctions are powered by a third-party service provider branded as “Live Auctioneers” these auctions can be viewed at www.AlderferAuction.com along with photos and descriptions. Items for these auctions are posted for 5-10 days prior to the date of the auction. From the comfort of your home you may view and monitor your bids 24/7.  For your convenience, these Auctions can be viewed at the facilities of Alderfer Auction during advertised preview times.

Online Only Timed Auction (Identified as “Alderfer Online”)
An online only timed auction is an online auction run largely by the computer. Items are posted on www.AlderferAuction.com along with photos and descriptions. The items are posted for 5-10 days prior to the close of the auction. From the comfort of your home you may view and monitor your bids 24/7. For your convenience, these items are also available to be viewed at the facilities of Alderfer Auction during advertised preview times. The computer bids on behalf of the bidder against any competition from the lowest possible bid to the maximum bid specified. Bidders are notified by email if they have been outbid. This provides the option for the bidder to increase their bids should they so choose. 

Online Only “Onsite” Auction (Identified as “Alderfer Online”)
An online only “onsite” timed auction is run the same way as an online-only timed auction except the items are located at a specified advertised site. An online only timed auction is an online auction run largely by the computer. Items are posted on www.AlderferAuction.com along with photos and descriptions. The items are posted for 5-10 days prior to the close of the auction. From the comfort of your home you may view and monitor your bids 24/7. Preview times and the location for pick up is advertised according to the terms of each of these events.

Preview
Specified date, time and location that personal property is available for prospective buyers to view.

Reserve or Reserve Price
The confidential minimum price that a seller is willing to accept for a personal property item to be sold at auction.

Results
Soon after every auction, the selling prices, known as the results, are posted online. The results include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, as this is the full amount the buyer has agreed to pay.

Seller
Entity that has legal possession (ownership) of any interests, benefits or rights inherent to the personal property.

Simulcast Auctions
Simulcast Auctions are conducted in front of a live audience. During these events each item presented in the auction is also available for bidding in an online venue hosted by a third party provider such as www.liveauctioneers.com, www.invaluable.com, www.proxybid.com. While the auctioneer is receiving bids from an assembled audience, the auctioneer is also taking bids from bidders who are bidding through the third-party providers in real time or by advance bidding. Following the auction the successful bidders are notified and payment arrangements are made; applicable buyer’s premium applies.

Storage Fees
Effective February 13, 2017, any items left at the Auction Center for more than two weeks following the auction date will incur storage fees at a rate of $10.00 per lot, per week, regardless of the size or value of the lot. Storage fees will begin on the 15th day regardless of payment status.

Telephone Bidding
Phone bids must be in writing. All phone bids are required to start at $250 or half of the published estimate.  We suggest that phone and absentee bids be made 24 hours in advance to allow time for processing.  

Terms and Conditions
The rules of the auction and certain aspects of the Purchase & Sale Agreement that are published, read and agreed upon by potential bidders prior to an auction sale.

Timed Auction
A timed auction is an online only sale run largely by computer. Lots are placed for sale online for a defined period of time, allowing bidders to register and then place maximum bids on items. The computer bids on behalf of the bidder against any competition, from the lowest possible bid to the maximum bid specified. Bidders are notified if they have been outbid. This provides the option to increase their bid should they so choose. When the pre-set time is up, the auction ends and the highest bidder on each lot is notified that he has won.

Withdraw / Pass (No Sale)
Failure to reach the reserve price or insufficient bidding.

Question: Can anyone go to an auction?

Answer:
At Alderfer, all auctions are public events and everyone is welcome.


Question: What kinds of items are sold at auction?

Answer:
Quite simply, if something can be sold, it has probably been sold at auction. Alderfer Auction & Appraisal sells antiques, fine art, firearms, automobiles, furniture, vintage items, dolls, coins, stamps, jewelry, books, toys, business equipment and other various collections.


Question: Are auctioneers licensed and bonded?

Answer:
In Pennsylvania all auctioneers are required to be licensed and bonded by the state. In addition, Alderfer auctioneers are involved in continuing education classes and have been awarded several certifications. Our auctioneers are also members of the National Auctioneers Association, Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association, and the Lehigh Valley Society of Auctioneers.


Question: What is a Buyer’s Premium?

Answer:
A Buyer’s Premium is a percentage of the high bid that is added to the high bid to establish the final sale price.


Question: What is an “absolute” auction?

Answer:
An absolute auction is an auction where all property is sold to the highest bidder, regardless of price. If an item isn’t selling it is grouped with the next item for sale so all items sell.


Question: What is a “reserve”?

Answer:
A reserve is a confidential minimum price that the seller is willing to accept for an item. In an auction, the auctioneer is only obligated to sell the item once the bid amount meets or exceeds the reserve price. 


Question: Do I have to register when I come to an auction?

Answer:
You only have to register if you would like to bid in the auction.


Question: What must I do to bid at an auction?

Answer:
When you arrive at the auction site, look for the registration area where you must provide adequate identification to receive a bidder’s number, terms and conditions, listing of the items (if applicable) and a schedule. Your bidding number must be shown to the auctioneer each time you bid.


Question: How do I know how much to bid?

Answer:
It is important to arrive at the auction early enough so you can inspect the items you are interested in. Since many items are sold “as is – where is,” it is critical that you examine items for condition, size, color, etc. Based on your examination, establish a value you are comfortable with. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. With online auctions the next possible bid will be shown on the screen.


Question: Can I preview the items before the auction?

Answer:
Yes. Generally you may preview the items the days before the auction. This information is available on the website.


Question: How do I bid?

Answer:
In order to bid at an auction, you need to make the auctioneer aware of you. To do this, hold up your bidder card or raise your hand. If the auctioneer does not immediately see you, shout “Yes.” The auctioneer will then take your bid and turn to seek another bid. If another bid is received, the auctioneer will return to you to ask if you want to bid again. Simply continue to say “Yes” to stay in the bidding.


Question: How do I stop bidding?

Answer:
To remove yourself from the bidding process, simply shake your head “No” when the auctioneer makes eye contact with you.


Question: Will I be able to understand the auctioneer?

Answer:
The “chant” of a good auctioneer is easily understood. The chant is merely a series of numbers connected by “filler” words to create a rhythm and make it pleasing to listen to. A basic chant tells the audience the current bid and the next bid being asked.


Question: How and when do I pay for the items I purchased?

Answer:
At Alderfer, bidders pay for their items when they are ready to leave. Payment may be made in cash, credit card, debit card, and personal checks (with approval). Credit cards are automatically charged for items purchased on Alderfer Online Only Auctions.


Question: What about removal of items from the auction?

Answer:
When you buy an item at the auction you are responsible for it. All items need to be removed the day of the auction. If you purchase large items and need assistance in moving, please inquire about our delivery service. If you need assistance to load large items into your own vehicle, simply ask one of the Alderfer personnel.

Become a Bidder – Buyer Information

Some lots are offered subject to a reserve, which is a confidential minimum price below which such a lot will not be sold. The record of sale, kept by the auctioneer and clerk, will be taken as absolute and final in all disputes.

2. Online Bidding
Online bidding allows you to bid via the internet from the comfort of your home. An Online Only Auction takes place over an extended period of time versus a Live and Online Auction which allows you to bid in select live auctions via the internet.

We understand computers can be confusing and frustrating. Below are a few steps that will help you to navigate the bidding process.


Step 1. Use a Qualified Browser

The browser is the door that connects your computer or device to the world-wide web.

  • We have found that using Internet Explorer (see the icon below) is NOT the optimal browser. This browser is prone to viruses and will not allow you to access certain parts of the bidding experience.
  • Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari (see the icons below) are excellent choices for a browser. Our system has been optimized to function on all three of these.

Alderfer Auction is in a community rich in art, conveniently located in the suburbs of Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Academy of Art. This has presented many opportunities for Alderfer to fill the needs of collectors locally and around the globe in search of pieces to fill their collections.

Alderfer Auction holds many records in their specialty of Pennsylvania Impressionists. Located just miles from New Hope, Bucks County and the Delaware River, this rich and diverse landscape provided popular subject matter for many of the Pennsylvania Impressionist painters and the New Hope School of Art. Alderfer Auction has established many records of sales including George Sotter’s “Village at Night” for $264,500, and “Snowbound Hills” for $247,250. Walter E. Baum, a native of Sellersville, PA, was an artist, teacher and journalist who also favored the rich landscape of his subjects. His “The Mill Sellersville, Winter” sold for a record $97,750. Additionally, “Snowbound Hills” by Arthur Meltzer still remains in the top two sales at $126,500.

Art has many forms, fashion and markets. Alderfer Auction has recognized the need in the marketplace to create appropriate venues for sale for both buyers and sellers. Alderfer helps clients discern which market is best suited for the sale of their works.

For over 25 years, Alderfer Auction has had a tradition of hosting “Fine and Decorative Arts” catalog auctions.  For these events, a color-illustrated, printed catalog is produced featuring items vetted from collections, institutions and estates from around the world and US. Alderfer Auction has developed a long-standing reputation for bringing some of the finest works of art of the Pennsylvania Impressionists to the market. These works of art, along with American and European works, are common findings in this venue. Also, inclusive to this event, are Decorative works including fine porcelain, art glass, pottery and Americana Fine Period and quality stylized furniture of the 18th, 19th and 20th century, Persian carpets, sculpture and bronzes often complement the findings. 

Jewelry and Luxury Gifts are a popular feature during these events. Alderfer Auction has brought some of the finest jewelry from private collections and estates to the market. In addition, due to high interest and value, special features such as historical items, signatures, maps and 19th century photography and ephemera, are often added to the “Fine and Decorative Arts” catalog auctions.

Alderfer Auction has Several Types of Online Auctions Available to meet the needs of our clients and customers. Each venue has unique qualities, please read the definitions below.

ONLINE ONLY TIMED AUCTIONS
IDENTIFIED AS “ALDERFER ONLINE”

An online only timed auction is an online auction run largely by the computer. Items are posted on www.AlderferAuction.com along with photos and descriptions. The items are posted for 5-10 days prior to the close of the auction. From the comfort of your home you may view and monitor your bids 24/7. For your convenience, these items are also available to be viewed at the facilities of Alderfer Auction during advertised preview times. The computer bids on behalf of the bidder against any competition from the lowest possible bid to the maximum bid specified. Bidders are notified by email if they have been outbid. This provides the option for the bidder to increase their bids should they so choose. 

Another unique feature in our timed auction is extended bidding. Alderfer Auction does not allow sniping. It's a bid placed within the last 3 minutes of a lot’s scheduled end time, we extend the sale by 3 minutes from the last bid. This way other bidders have a chance to place a bid. Extending bidding continues until 2 hours after the last lot scheduled and time. All purchases are billed to the high bidder’s credit card at time of purchase; applicable buyer’s premium applies.


ONLINE ONLY “ONSITE” TIMED AUCTIONS
ALSO IDENTIFIED AS “ALDERFER ONLINE”

An online only “onsite” timed auction is run the same way as an online-only timed auction except the items are located at a specified advertised site. 

An online only timed auction is an online auction run largely by the computer. Items are posted on AlderferAuction.com along with photos and descriptions. The items are posted for 5-10 days prior to the close of the auction. From the comfort of your home you may view and monitor your bids 24/7. Preview times and the location for pick up is advertised according to the terms of each of these events.
