About Christopher Cairns

Christopher Cairns, Sculptor: Christophercairns.com

Born in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1942, Christopher Cairns has dedicated over five decades to the art of sculpture. He earned an A.B. in English Literature from Oberlin College in 1965 and later pursued an M.F.A. in Sculpture at Tulane University, graduating in 1970. Cairns' work delves into profound themes such as love, death, metamorphosis, and redemption, often reflecting on the human condition. His sculptures are characterized by an interplay of convex and concave forms, rendered in flat planes that convey both aesthetic beauty and deep significance. He has stated, "The quest for some personal religious framework permeates the themes and attitudes of my sculpture." Throughout his illustrious career, Cairns has exhibited extensively across the United States and Europe. Notable exhibitions include shows at the Queens Museum, the Michener Museum, and the Grounds for Sculpture in New Jersey. His works have also been featured in collaborative performances, such as Michael Hersch's monodrama "On the Threshold of Winter," where his sculptures played a pivotal role in the stagecraft. In addition to his artistic practice, Cairns has significantly contributed to art education. He served as a professor at Haverford College, influencing a generation of artists with his insights and dedication to the craft.
