In this Wayne estate auction, Alderfer's is selling items from the collection of Dr. William L., Jr. and Lorraine Hanaway out of their home of over 50 years. A distinguished scholar of ancient Persian language, literature, and culture, Dr. Hanaway was a longtime professor at the University of Pennsylvania. During Bill’s career, they lived at various times in Iran, England and Italy. In addition, Bill traveled extensively in Iran, Afghanistan and around the Middle East.   Bill and Lorraine shared a love of New York City, and of books, walking, opera, world travel, and the outdoors.  This estate auction highlights two main collecting areas: Furniture and Ceramics. The furniture selection includes carved wood pieces such as a credenza with floral panels, a pair of tilt-top tables by OneidaCraft, and a marble top cabinet with brass pulls and interior storage. The ceramics category features Japanese and English porcelain, including a floral tea set, a Johnson Bros dinnerware group, and various blue-and-white and floral-patterned serving pieces. Additional offerings span a range of decorative and historical items, including a gilded wall mirror, a red upholstered armchair with rope-twist detailing, and a framed Metropolitan Opera display with a 1940 playbill and Kirsten Flagstad signature. The auction reflects a tastefully curated household with an emphasis on traditional furnishings, global tablewares, and cultural memorabilia.
