Milton James Burns (1853-1933) acclaimed marine artist. A sailor in his younger years, Burns later studied at the Art Student's League and National Academy of Design in New York City in the 1870's and helped found the Salmagundi Sketch Club in 1871. He would have his artwork published in Harper's Weekly, St. Nicholas Magazine, Scribners Century, Literary Digest and would exhibit at the National Academy in the 1870's and 1880's. This archive includes 28 pencil, graphite and gouache drawings mostly of nautical nature including ships, sailing vessels, life boats in action, mariners, ship interiors, still life and shore scenes. Sheet measure 2.5" x 3.5" up to 10" x 14". Of the 28 images in this archive 24 are signed or initialed with some presenting information as to location, subjection matter and/or publication these were to be used for. Some sheets exhibit toning and some slight edge chipping. Lot is accompanied by some Xeroxed research and some calligraphed labels by Lekites. Provenance: Charles Lekites Collection.
