Civil War Burnside (5th Model) Carbine Model 1865 in .54 cal with 21" round barrel. Carbine is serial numbered"4958". Top of the breech is stamped in 2 lines"BURNSIDE PATENT / MODEL OF 1864". The lockplate behind the hammer is stamped in 2 lines"BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. / PROVIDENCE, R.I.". Barrel is lightly stamped"CAST STEEL 1864". Carbine exhibits good but dirty bore. Metal exhibits much of its original bluing and casehardening. Wood in good condition and exhibits some slight abrasions. Left side of stock exhibits two ordnance inspector's cartouches"OBG" and"GC" (George Curtis).
