Sharps (New Model 1859) carbine in .52 cal with 22" round barrel. Carbine is serial numbered"31214". Right side of lock stamped in 2 lines"R. S. LAWRENCE PAT. / APRIL 12th 1859" and in 2 lines"C. SHARPS PAT. / OCT. 5th 1862". On left side of receiver is stamped in 2 lines"C. SHARPS PAT. / SEPT. 12th 1848.". Barrel stamped between sight and barrel band in 3 lines "SHARPS RIFLE/MFG CO./HARTFORD CT" Carbine presents brass patch box, buttplate, and barrel band. Rear sight is stamped in 3 lines "S. LAWRENCE/PATENT/FEB 15, 1859". Metal of carbine exhibits toning/darkening with some light surface rust and some corrosion around breech. Wood exhibits some abrasions and digs (some deeper) to stock and forestock. Beneath barrel has been added a ram/cleaning rod that is now lacking one carrier tube.
